Gender and State in Iraq
The founding of the .school, in fact, marks the initiation of women's entrance into the public sector through the doors of education. On 14 November 1911 a school for Jewish women opened; and on 28 January 1913 one opened for Muslim women ( Daud 1958, 48). When the British occupied Iraq in 1918 after the defeat of the Ottoman empire, they attempted to discourage further development" of schools for girls on [he grounds that "there is no need for women in government offices; there are not enough femaleteachers; the people arc fanatic and. do not want to send their daughters to school" (Daud 1958,48teachers; the people arc fanatic and. do not want to send their daughters to school" (Daud 1958,48)
